Photon Blaster Frequently Asked Questions

(Click on a question.)

How easy is it for a non-technical person to install the Photon Blaster?

Many non-technical people have successfully installed the Photon Blaster. Detailed instructions are on this website in the installation section and a comprehensive manual come. with the unit. Help is always available from support@PhotonBlaster.com

How long does it take to install Photon Blaster?

A typical installation takes about 40 minutes.

Are Photon Blasters compatible with the BMW CAN-bus?

Photon Blasters are fully compatible with the BMW CAN-bus. They draw very little current and will not trip any over-current sensors.

How much current do Photon Blasters draw?

Photon Blasters draw ~ 320 milliamps (1/3 of an Amp), much less than halogen fog or marker lights. This low current drain will not affect your bike's electrical system in any way. Photon Blasters are particulalry well suited to smaller motorcycles that have limited electrical power available and that cannot use high power halogen lights.

How do Photon Blasters compare to other front safety lights?

Photon Blasters have several advantages compared to other systems on the market:

Photon Blasters are unique in their use of a modulated light, where the LED's intensity alternates rapidly between a high and a low brightness (patent pending). This innovation greatly increases the conspicuity of your motorcycle compared to a steadily burning front light.

The Photon Booster LED modules that come with the system incorporate a constant current regulator that ensures high LED brightness even if the battery voltage drops as low as 9 volts. Many other LED light designs get dim and even go out entirely at voltages less than 11 volts. This current regulation feature ensures the Photon Boosters will operate at full specified brightness even if the bike's charging system is marginal or faulty.

Photon Boosters are amber rather than white. Studies have shown that a amber light is noticed more readily than is a white light. Also, federal regulations limit the number of white lights on the front of a vehicle, whereas there are no such limitations for amber lights.

If I sell my current bike, how easy is it for me to move my Photon Blasters to my new bike?

All connectors used on the Photon Blaster are reusbale, although your bike may require a different mounting bracket. These are available for our Order page.

What motorcycles are Photon Blasters compatible with?

Photon Blasters are compatible with all motorcycle makes and models. This includes all late model BMW's that use the CAN-bus.

Can I power lights other than the ones I receive with the Photon Blaster system from the Photon Blaster controller?

Yes, you can. The Photon Blaster IQ-150 control module can power up to 8 amber Photon Boosters, or two Photon Boosters and up to 2 amps of additional lights, including your stock turn signals, if desired.

Can I connect the Photon Booster LED modules directly to 12 volts, without using the control module?

Yes, you can. The Photon Booster LED modules are designed to operate on from 9 - 16 volts.

The Photon Blaster LEDs no longer flicker. They are on solidly, just like a normal light. How can I get them to flicker again?

It's likely that you have inadvertently disabled the conspicuity flicker. To reenable it, turn the bike's ignition on for less than 2 seconds, then off, three times in a row. The next time you turn on the ignition the flicker will toggle from on to off or from off to on.
