Numerous traffic safety studies have pointed to the relative inconspicuousness of motorcycles as a contributing factor in many motorcycle accidents. Motorcycles are much smaller than cars, and with their single headlight they often blend in with the other traffic on the highway. This single light also makes it difficult for approaching drivers to judge how far away the motorcycle is and how fast it is approaching. This can tempt them to pull out in front of the motorcycle when it is unsafe to do so.

Motorcycles are hard to see from the rear also. This is not suprising, as a motorcycle's tail light is only a few square inches in area, often with only a single bulb. Combine this with the small cross section of a motorcycle, and it's easy to understand why riders are paranoid about traffic approaching from behind.
